I hate to throw away food. HATE it! My mom shared this tip with me so thought I would pass it on to you!
When you get your lettuce/greens wash them thoroughly in cold water and shake gently to remove any dirt, bugs (I grow my own or get it from the farmers market so there’s always a chance of bugs).
Next, get a cotton or linen towel. You can see mine is an old vintage one that I loved too much to get rid of with lots of holes. Wet your towel by sprinkling water all over it. Don’t soak it, just enough to make it damp.
Then wrap up your lettuce like a bouquet of flowers. Place it in your crisper drawer and thank me later!
It will keep your lettuce crisper and fresher a lot longer. If the towel gets dry and the lettuce a little sad and wilty (takes a few days or even a week), place the lettuce in icy water for a few minutes, re-wet your towel and wrap it back up.
Simple as that!
Tara
Great tip! I wash mine, wrap them in a paper towel and then place in a plastic bag. That keeps them fresh, too.
Love the way your repurposed your vintage kitchen towel.
Thanks Jackie! That is a great idea too! Yes, I can’t bear to part with my favorites so this way I still get to see them.
Thanks for stopping in, as always.
See this is why I love you! What a beautifully simple idea! Thank you for sharing……oh & thank your Mom too!
Thank you Jane!!
ha! Yes, I will thank Mom too!
You’re a geeeeenius, Tara! OK, so your mom was the original, but you’re the lovely who passed on the info, so you’re all genius in my book!
Yup, yup Mom is the one!
Glad you liked it Bec! It works great! Thanks for stopping in!
I usually do what Jackie (above) does – but your way is much more eco-friendly and prettier! Pinning it now…
Thank you Justine!! I’m glad you liked it!
Hubby and I have had troubles eating all our goodies….too busy of schedule, and we forget about stuff:-( So lately we are working really hard to not waste stuff anymore, and succeeding so far, YAY US!!! This is a great tip, thank you so much:-) Hugs, Terra
It’s hard when your schedule is crazy busy! I just threw out some green onions and old cabbage yesterday and hated that I let them go to waste, but it happens. I can say thought that by doing this, I haven’t had to throw out any lettuce in a really long time. Glad to hear that you guys are doing great at reducing your waste. Feels good, doesn’t it?!?
Thank you for stopping in Terra! xoxox
I have heard of doing this. Thanks for the reminder. And yes, I always wash lettuces – it’s amazing the bugs you can find! xx
No problem!! Glad you stopped in. Isn’t it though?? I always find a bug lurking in my greens.
I definitely need to try that. If only I had room in my crisper drawers to keep them nice. I typically have veggies in every corner of my fridge. 3 crisper drawers is not enough!
I hear ya! I haven’t had to through out ‘bad’ lettuce in years using this little trick. You sound like me on the crisper drawers! Curing the height of Summer my counters are covered in produce! No where to put that stuff! lol Thanks for stopping by!
